Allen & Overy - Firm Profile

About Us

Allen & Overy is a leading global law firm operating in over 30 countries. We cover 99% of the world’s economy, working with companies, organisations and governments on issues of incredible scope and complexity. We’re a pioneering, forward-thinking business; the only one to have topped the Financial Times Innovative Law Firm ranking four times. Our trainees can expect a rewarding experience that will prepare them for a career at the very pinnacle of the profession. In each of their seats they’ll support a senior associate or partner, with exposure to work that crosses departments and borders – in fact, 73% of the firm’s work involves two or more jurisdictions. Around 80% of trainees have the chance to spend six months in one of our 44 overseas offices, or on secondment to one of our various clientele – who include 87% of Forbes’ top 100 public companies. The legal industry is changing fast, and we’re working to equip our people with the skills and knowledge they will need to operate in the legal landscape of the future. For trainees, this means an in-house training programme characterised by flexibility and choice – like the chance to take a litigation course alongside their rotations. Built on the work of talented and motivated people, in a supportive and collaborative environment, we’re dedicated to challenging the status quo and leading the way in commercial law. So whatever you’ve studied – and around half our trainees have a degree in a subject other than law – we will help you develop into an exceptional lawyer and learn to do work of the highest possible standard.

Open days and first-year opportunities

A&O First is our work experience programme exclusively for first-year undergraduates. As well as providing you with the skills needed to be successful in our firm, it gives you real insight into a career in law and the opportunity to network with people throughout our business. The deadline for applications is on 15th February 2018. More details and the online application form can be found on our website at aograduate.com. We also have 80 vacancies for an open day on 14th March 2018, open to anyone in the second year of their undergraduate degree and onwards, as well as graduates from any degree discipline, who want to get greater insight into a career in commercial law.

Vacation Scheme

Allen & Overy offers 50 vacation placements across the year from all degree disciplines. We have two schemes across winter and summer, with students joining us in their penultimate or final year of undergraduate study or who have already graduated. You will gain experience in one of our practice areas, where you will work alongside our lawyers on real deals and cases. For full details about eligibility requirements and application deadlines please visit our website at www.aograduate.com.

Training Contracts

The Allen & Overy Training Contract is characterised by flexibility and choice. The seat structure ensures that you get to see as many parts of the firm as possible and that your learning is hands-on, guided by an experienced associate or partner. Your choice of a priority seat is guaranteed unless exceptional business needs or other extenuating circumstances arise. Given the strength of the firm’s international finance practice, trainees are required to spend a minimum of 12 months in at least two of the three core departments of banking, corporate and international capital markets. The firm offers its trainees the option of completing a litigation course. This means that trainees do not need to spend time in the firm’s litigation and dispute resolution department to gain their contentious experience if they are sure their interests lie elsewhere. There are also opportunities for trainees to undertake an international or client secondment during their final year of training.

Qualifications

Candidates must be predicted or have achieved a 2(1) degree and 340 UCAS points (AAB), or equivalent, and have a genuine interest in law. Commercially aware and quick to adapt; our well-organised trainees need to be effective team players with an eagerness to learn.

Benefits

Working at Allen & Overy offers an exceptional range of benefits, including: season ticket and cycle-to-work loans, permanent life, health and business travel insurance, a health and wellbeing centre including in-house GP, physiotherapist, dentist and dental plan, an on-site fitness centre and sports hall plus in-house beauty and wellbeing therapies, as well as access to a wide range of discounted goods and services.

Sponsorship

We pay the full fees for GDL/LPC and a maintenance grant of £8,000 for both. Other sponsorship support is looked at on a case-by-case basis.
